Endowment Fund: Michele Eggleton “Caritas” Award

Endowment Spotlight

Saints is blessed to have many friends and alumni who generously donate to the school’s endowment fund.  A number of donors have created perpetual named and endowed scholarships to honor a loved one, an Augustinian, or favorite teacher.  A named and endowed scholarship is created with a minimum gift of $10,000.   The amount of the scholarship is a portion of the interest earned on the principal; the principal itself is not used.  Donors may designate the criteria by which a student can receive a scholarship.

Even after serving 30 years in the Saints community and “retiring” in 2014 former teacher Michele Eggleton still supports Saints throughout the school year by printing flyers, banners, cards and materials for many of the school’s annual functions and events.  You may see her on campus dropping materials off in the main office before a big rally or assembly, cheering on the team during a big game with her grandson, or even attending mass on Wednesday morning with the boys. Named the 1999 NFL teacher of the year during her time at Saints, Michele taught algebra, geometry, word processing and graphic design.

Over three decades she essentially established the computer education department, helped organize and produce the school’s website and was a driving force behind the school’s technology movement all while making a lasting impact on students outside of the classroom.  Ms. Eggleton is famous for forming and maintaining a close relationship with her students. As one former Saintsmen details: “Ms. Eggleton doesn’t just teach; she bonds with her students. By the end of the first day, you feel like you’ve known her for years”

When asked to reflect on the impact of the Saints community Michele reflected: “Having taught at St. Augustine High School from the Class of 1984 through the class of 2014 was a wonderful & fulfilling experience.  I have many fond memories and frequently look back with a smile on my face.  I cannot help but be impressed by the many accomplishments of Saints graduates.  Saints alums have become  successful educators, pilots, doctors, dentists, financial advisors, military men, realtors, construction contractors, social workers and politicians.  Many have sons whose hope it is to follow in the footsteps of their fathers and have what is described as “The Saints Experience”.   It is with that in mind the Eggleton Caritas Award has been established.  I am hoping to watch it grow so that the legacy of becoming a Saintsman will be realized for many young men in the years to come!”
