Alumnus of the Year 2012 – Paul Tuomainen ’63

The St. Augustine High School Association Alumni Board of Directors is proud to honor Paul Tuomainen ’63 as its 2012 Alumnus of the Year!

Paul graduated from Saints in 1963 after a stellar academic and athletic career in which he was a three sport varsity letterman in football, basketball, and served as the baseball teams team captain.  After leaving saints Paul graduated from the university of San Diego in 1967 and USD Law School in the spring of ’71.  While attending school in 1967 he started his 40-year career with Bank of America before retiring in 2007. He has worked part time with Torrey Pines Bank  for the past 3½ years before allegedly retiring for good….

For the last 13 years Paul has served the school in various positions on the Board of Trustees/Board of Directors. Accepting an invitation from fellow class of ’63 alum Leo Sullivan to join the board’s finance committee, Paul became an incredible asset of the board and steward of the school in serving as the financial committee chairman.  As Chairman of the Finance committee, Paul put together the Request for Proposal that lead to the successful financing of Phase I for the school’s master reconstruction plan.

Paul also went on to succeed Steve South as President of The Board of Directors and served in that capacity for two years.  As President of the Board he met with the North Park planning commission and gained their unanimous support for the substantial conformance review within the schools master plan. This vital accomplishment allowed for the new academic buildings in Phase I to be built with as little effect upon the students and school community as possible.  During his term as president Paul was an ex-officio member of all the board’s sub-committees and spent time with each of them when they met in support of Saints.

Still serving to this day as a member on the school’s board of directors and finance committee, he enjoys the challenges of getting ready for the next phase of the school’s continued campus development.  Paul is married to his lovely wife Jan, and they have four kids, 2 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.
