On Feb. 22, 2013, I reached a milestone in my professional career. It marked the 40th anniversary of my first day as a sportswriter in San Diego County, starting at The Sentinel in 1973 and progressing to the Escondido Times-Advocate, the North County Times and now the Union Tribune. Included in there are about 5,000 games I’ve covered in my career. Most of those have been high school games.
