Alumni Board President’s Message – 2021/2022

To my fellow Saintsmen, it is my honor to write this letter as your St. Augustine Alumni Association President. I want to start this letter off pointing out that this is your Alumni Association. We are here to help you stay connected to the school, to help you be involved in campus life, and to put on events that help promote St. Augustine High School in the community. For those of you that don’t know how the Alumni Association works, you are all members once you have graduated from St. Augustine High School. Welcome to the group; We are happy to have you with us!

The alumni events serve as fundraisers for the Alumni Endowment Fund, which provides scholarships for the sons of alumni to attend St. Augustine High School. The Alumni Association Board currently consists of seventeen (17) members from the Class of 1955 through 2005, we work with the Alumni Liaisons who represent their respective graduating class. Together, our main purpose is to keep the alumni of St. Augustine connected with each other and the school, as soon as you receive your diploma.

As Saintsmen, we were taught the Catholic faith and emphasized the Augustinian Values of Unity, Truth and Love (Unitas, Veritas and Caritas). The Augustinian Values are a representation of our time spent at Saints. We were practicing Unitas through our friendships and inherent Brotherhood in our community. We showed our response to human necessity, care for the human spirit, and support for the common good through the fundraisers and drives we participated in. Veritas was present every day in the classrooms, while we studied to understand reason and faith. Caritas was evident in the participation of weekly mass and are expression of love. Serving the common good, caring for those in need and announcing the Good News are some of the expressions love we had for our community. Practicing the Catholic and Augustinian Values should not stop at the end of your time at Saints. The Alumni Association hopes to continue the same actions through our work and want to offer the same opportunity to all alumni.

Traditionally, the newly elected Alumni Association President letter comes out as the new school year kicks off, but I wanted to wait and get a few events under our belt to give you the opportunity to see your Alumni Association in action. The board members have been busy in action; The 35th Annual Golf Tournament at Rancho Bernardo Inn was held in August and the 26th Annual Bocce Tournament on campus in September proved that we are in for some good times!

As we are all aware, 2020 and the start of 2021 didn’t go as planned and we were forced to cancel many events and postpone our golf tournament fundraiser. Our golf committee, led by Phil Sciuto ’79, worked tirelessly to put on an amazing event that was sold out months in advance. This year’s tournament raised more funds for the Alumni Scholarship than any previous golf tournament. That success is a reflection of the current committee’s hard work and dedication but also a reflection of the foundation created by the men that planned the thirty-four (34) previous tournaments. Their commitment to Saints and our association, helped to get us where we are now.

The Alumni Association is always looking for support. Annually, we host an alumni golf tournament, a bocce tournament, the Turkey Trot, the Saints poetry contest, sport fishing charter(s), hosted game watch parties during high school basketball season, homecoming reunions, 50th year reunion celebration at graduation, and Parochial School football, basketball and soccer tournaments. All of these events allow us to raise money for the scholarship fund, but also serve as a way for the community to see St. Augustine High School and promote the school to potential future Saintsmen. If you are interested in becoming more involved with our association, help coordinate and execute current alumni events, or brainstorm potential ideas for future events, we would love to have you. Please contact me or any other of our association members.

On behalf of the St. Augustine Alumni Association, I want to thank all of those who have volunteered before us; We would not be where we are as a group without your enthusiasm and diligence. To those currently serving alongside me, I am ready to forge ahead and continue to grow this association with you, while supporting the school we care so much about.

The Association is excited for you to join us in person again and look forward to the chance to say “hello” and share stories about our time at Saints. You are always welcome to join us at a scheduled meeting or attend the next event. Keep an eye on our social media channels for information regarding our upcoming events. As always, Go Saints!
