Terry Monahan – Class of ’68

I recently won first place from the Society of Professionals Journalists, San Diego Chapter for a story on a football player who came back from missing his junior season with bipolar because his academics fell along with everything else in his life to becoming an all-league player as a senior at Poway High. His coach suggested Trevor Ramdin as a possible story instead of one on the player I had suggested. He said Ramdin’s story was amazing. Ramdin wound up being on the team that won it’s first Palomar League title in a long time in 2018. He spoke openly about the whole ordeal and how having football “saved his life.” Earlier, the same story was awarded second place in the state by the California Newspapers Publishers Association.

I have been a sports writer in San Diego County since February, 1973, covering my first game when I was just 22. That was 46 years ago. I am currently a freelancer for a number of papers.
