February 2016 – Tournament Recap

Friday February 12th was a glorious day for the Purple Gang at Barona. The weather was shorts and shirts, course conditions impeccable and the golf—challenging and fun. The format for the day was a two man scramble that included 4 closest to the pin holes.

Saintsman Ryan Rupe, a tennis player in high school, was on all four cards for the closet to the pin holes, winning two pins. The other winners were Don Eklund and Matt Pribyl. At the end of the day, with handicaps accounted for, two teams netted the low score of 62. Tournament chairman Greg Ranney had to use three tie breakers to come up with a first place winner. Don Eklund and Tom Arsulich squeaked past Ignacio Bustos and Jess Wilson for the big prize. Third place went to Ryan Rupe and Greg Ranney.

The Purple Cup – January 2016

On Saturday, January 2nd the Purple Gang alumni and friends battled the Saints Golf Team for the 4th Annual Purple Cup. In a Ryder Cup format, six singles matches and 3 best ball matches resulted in another tight finish with the Purple Gang edging the Saints team to win for the second year in row and 2016 bragging rights. The Purple Cup now stands at 2 wins for each team.

Expecting cold temperatures, alumni and friends were advised to “dress warm, where Purple and shorts”. At the 7:30 a.m. shotgun start, Mother Nature and Eaglecrest Golf Club obliged with a temperature just above freezing. Several Purple gang members took the challenge and wore the warm color Purple and sported shorts for attire. By the end of the day, these brave fools had the last laugh as the temperature climbed to the mid to high 60’s.

Running concurrently with the Purple Cup was the regular monthly Purple Gang tournament. Purple Gang tournament chairman Greg Ranney set-up a skins game that included a closest to the pin contest. Jess Wilson, Dave Cammall, Chris Miller and Greg Ranney won the closest to the pins for the par 3”s. Skins winners were Don Eklund, Chris Miller, Dave Cammall, Jess Wilson and Tom Graciano.

The Purple Gang Golf Club would like to thank Saints Golf coach Tom Isaak and Purple Ganger member Jess Wilson for all their efforts to bring Saint’s student athletes, alumni and friends together for another successful and very fun Purple Cup.

The Purple Cup – January 2015

On January 3rd San Diego enjoyed a glorious shirtsleeve day. There was not a cloud in the sky at Eagle Crest Golf Course and The Purple Cup was up for grabs. Saints golf coach Tom Isaak and the Saints Purple Gang Golf Club combined efforts to host the third annual tournament. The match play tourney featured the St. Augustine Golf Team against the Purple Gang alumni and friends.

Infectious fun was the theme of the day. The high schoolers brought energy, intensity, focus and the hope of a three-peat. With back to back one point wins the Saints Golf Team was anxious to make it three in a row. The Purple Gangers soaked it all in and enjoyed everything about the young Saintsmen. The school is still doing it right!

At the end of the day it was another squeaker, the Purple Gang edged the Saints Golf Team 7-6. For the 70 plus players who participated it was a wonderful experience. Many thanks are owed to Coach Tom Isaak and Purple Ganger Jess Wilson ’70 for their countless hours resulting in this successful tournament. Go Saints!
